A month before the first pre-season test, Ferrari finally reveals his new V6 Engine Turbo Hybrid that will equip its cars but also those of Sauber and Marussia .
We already knew for some time Renault and Mercedes engines in 2014 , the Scuderia , the third and final engine F1 next season, remaining well hidden until now in Maranello . We now know a little more about him, starting with its name: 059 /3.
But as Luca Marmoni , chief engine of Ferrari recalls , rather it is a " power unit " rather than a simple engine. Indeed , the new regulations coming into force next year completely changed the approach to drive F1 .
Besides the change of architecture, the electrical part is gaining importance with KERS whose power increases significantly (about 160 hp ) ( a naturally aspirated V8 2.4 L and V6 Turbo 1,6 L ) and becomes usable for about 30 seconds per lap , against 6 today. The gain in performance provided by this new hybrid module according Ferrari would about 3 seconds per lap , while the current KERS makes a gain of about 3 or 4/10 ! The latter recovering energy during braking , version 2014 recover more via a second electric motor the energy of the exhaust gas at the turbo .
The storage of this energy will be carried in a pack of batteries currently much more powerful , with electronic management system provided by ever more sophisticated computers ensuring all optimum efficiency.
And energy efficiency will certainly be a key to success in 2014, the fuel load is drastically reduced ( and watched !) Only 100 kg per race. To further reduce consumption and always , Shell, the historic partner of Scuderia has also worked extensively on lubrication to minimize friction inside the engine block.
Another advantage highlighted during the presentation of the Ferrari V6 develops both chassis and engine , which is a big plus in terms of the optimal location of the block in the car and synergy the two development teams can put in place so that everyone's needs are taken into account , all to form a torque motor / chassis ideal .
Hopefully everything will be reliable because in 2014 the teams will be entitled only 5 engines per car for the entire season , a challenge for engineers !
Here the video to find out more details on the genesis and operation of the 059/ 3:
Finally, Kimi Raikkonen would be the first to test the new Ferrari car (the new V6 ) during the first two days of testing at Jerez in late January . Fernando Alonso then take over for the last weeks.
