At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW stand will be placed under the sign of power, lower fuel consumption and emissions and downsizing (we will speak well of the L3 1.5 L Twin Power Turbo). Also alongside the new i3 and i8, the Munich manufacturer will unveil a big SUV Plug-in Hybrid, this is the eDrive X5 Concept or how to adapt a large vehicle to ecological constraints of time imposed by the European Union in particular.
The X5 eDrive is recognizable thanks to its grille blue, some aerodynamic fairings and the inlay in the rear bumper new tailpipes. The X5 also features some specific style elements such as roof rails, alloy wheels with the special design in 21-inch and a connector for the charging cable which glows blue during cooldown.
Developed on the basis of the new X5, this version PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is meant to be a modern, luxurious SUV, efficient and politically correct while allowing BMW to reduce the CO2 mix of its range.
This X5 is powered by a gasoline engine Twin Power Turbo (Author's note: it looks for N20B20) associated with an in-house developed electric motor which boasts the power of 70 kW (95 hp). No details yet but BMW announces exercise of the 0 à 100 km / h in less than 7.0 folded seconds for a mixed standard consumption of 3.8 l/100 km and CO2 emissions below 90 g / km specifications.
In all-electric mode X5 eDrive is able to reach the Vmax of 120 km / h and have a range of 30 km. This SUV is a hybrid Munich xDrive ie it has all-wheel drive. It was found that the level of performance is significantly higher than that offers Land Rover and Range hybrid ... which however have the advantage of being sold in less than a month!
BMW explains that the hybrid version of the X5 has three ways of managing its engine. This provides the following modes:
1 - "Intelligent Hybrid Drive", which allows an optimal and efficient management of the engine to operate between sportiness and efficiency mode.
2 - "Battery Safe" mode which ensures a permanent charge of the lithium-ion battery.
3 - Mode "Full Electric" which allows traffic without issue especially in urban areas.
The calculation of autonomy X5 eDrive is so called dynamic and progressively miles because the energy management of X5eDrive is interconnected with the navigation system. This real-time management takes into account the topography of the road, the speed limits, the number of occupants of the X5 and luggage volume in order to better adapt the fuel consumption and the energy available in the battery . X5 is the eDrive is rechargeable via a public terminal or via a household outlet with a current rating at least 20 A or a Wallbox if we have a suitable grid.
The Munich manufacturer gives no date of production and marketing and even less it will have to wait a bit before returning to showrooms this great hybrid SUV.
Some see in this X5 eDrive a successor already forgotten X6 ActiveHybrid but it is not sure whether that prevailed at the time of development of the electric vehicle as input here is not intended to boost performance, only to reduce consumption and emissions. Not forget that BMW is on the way that will lead in a few years to be a general feature
