Mazda Skyactiv-X: The petrol engine becomes a self-igniter

With the new engine Mazda Skyactiv-X, the Japanese want to revolutionize the engine technology from 2019, because the petrol engine is practically a self-igniter. In just over two years, the first standard petrol engine with homogeneous compression ignition will be introduced to the market. You will find all the details about the new technology in here.

The Japanese are still researching engine concepts, of which other manufacturers Daimler and VW have long since passed. With the new Mazda Skyactiv-X, the petrol engine becomes a self-starter. In 2019, the petrol engine will come on the market with compression ignition. The new engine generation of the "Skyactiv" series has been characterized with the abbreviation "SPCCI", briefly for "Spark Controlled Compression Ignition". The gasoline is thereby ignited by the heat, which is produced by extreme compression, just like the diesel. Thanks to the new technology, the NOx raw emissions should remain at a comparatively low level despite the lean mixture.

Of course, the whole thing is not as simple as the layman might imagine, because the self-ignition of gasoline can not be controlled as easily as the diesel fuel and in some load and temperature ranges is not possible. Therefore, the system still receives the support of spark plugs and when the engine starts cold, the engine continues to function as a conventional petrol engine.

The spark plug has two essential advantages for the petrol engine with compression ignition: on the one hand, it maximizes the operating range in which the compression ignition can be used, and on the other hand, a seamless transition between compression and spark ignition is possible. Thanks to the extreme compression, so-called homogeneous compression ignition ("HCCI") occurs, whereby the mixture ignites itself in several places and burns more evenly. The new technology will be used for the first time in the 2018/2019 fiscal year in the Mazda 3, which will be equipped with 2.0 liters of displacement, direct fuel injection and a type of air assist mechanism ("Air Assist Mechanism").

This is intended to provide 10 to 30 percent more torque than a current Mazda aspirator, and when consuming it is below that of a comparable diesel.
